The position of the Catholic Church is that life is sacred - a unique gift from God. The Church opposes abortion where the life of a child is ended in the womb, and euthanasia which is the ending of a life before natural death. We believe that all life should be cherished at all times.

To assist those experiencing the extremely difficult circumstances of life, the Church encourages practical initiatives to help those in need,; including palliative care for the terminally ill and support for mothers-to-.be

Official Church Response to Abortion

“God, the Lord of life, has entrusted to men the noble mission of safeguarding life, and men must carry it out in a manner worthy of themselves. Life must be protected with the utmost care from the moment of conception: abortion and infanticide are abominable crimes” (Vatican Council II, Gaudium et spes, n.51).

The traditional White Flower retiring collection for the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) will take place at all Masses this weekend. Please be as generous as you can to help the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children to defend unborn babies and help their mothers. The success of the White Flower Collection is founded on the compassion and generosity of faithful churchgoers in parishes across the United Kingdom. SPUC is grateful for the unapologetic defence of unborn babies and vulnerable people that the teaching of the Catholic Church provides.

This teaching has been presented in numbers 2270-2273 in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, in these terms:

«Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person - among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you” (Jer. 1:5). “My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately wrought in the depths of the earth” (Psalm 139:15).
