  • What it is…

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the mission of the Church. Pope Francis has invited Catholics throughout the world to listen prayerfully to what the Holy Spirit is saying to us. We are then called to share our insights with our Archbishop George Stack, who after reviewing the feedback, will submit a summary document to the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales. This is expected to happen before Christmas.

As a parish,  (and indeed the Church) we are being asked to explore ten themes. These cover many of the issues within our Church today. We don't have to answer every single one, but there is a unifying theme to follow: how can the Church better exercise her role of offering hope to ALL the people of this generation?

Pope Francis is using this unique worldwide listening exercise to prepare for a Synod of Bishops which is expected to take place in Rome in 2023.  Archbishop George  Stack will use the material which the process will generate in our own Archdiocese to devise and facilitate a pastoral plan.

  • What it's not

It is clear that the purpose of this Synod is not to produce more documents. Rather, it is intended to inspire people to dream about the Church we are called to be, to make people’s hopes flourish, to stimulate trust, to bind up wounds, to weave new and deeper relationships, to learn from one another, to build bridges, to enlighten minds, warm hearts, and restore strength to our hands for our common mission (PD, 32).

Thus the objective of this Synodal Process is not only a series of exercises that start and stop but rather a journey of growing authentically towards the communion and mission that God calls the Church to live out in the third millennium. And so we are beginning this journey by inviting you our community(our family) to participate in this new mission.

  • Who's it for

We see throughout the Gospels how Jesus reaches out to all. He does not only save people individually but as a people that he gathers together, as the one Shepherd of the entire flock (cf. John 10:16).

The ministry of Jesus shows us that no one is excluded from God’s plan of salvation.

In this light, our objective is to consult the People of God so that the Synodal Process is carried out through listening to all the baptized.  Pope Francis is inviting us to participate in this Synodal Process including; those on the margins, the handicapped, refugees, migrants, the elderly, people who live in poverty, Catholics who are resting (lapsed) or have left the church.  Also, it is important that we hear the voices of our children and young people

ABOUT OUR PARISH / CHURCH SYNOD

  • Communion

The Church is Catholic because she is sent to all, in order to gather the entire human family from every nation and culture, under the Lordship of Christ and in the unity of his Spirit.

By His gracious will, God gathers us together as diverse peoples of one faith, through the covenant that He offers to His people. The communion we share finds its deepest roots in the love and unity of the Trinity. It is Christ who reconciles us to the Father and unites us with each other in the Holy Spirit.

Together, we are inspired by listening to the Word of God, through the living Tradition of the Church, and grounded in the sensus fidei [sense of faith] that we share.

We all have a role to play in discerning and living out God’s call for his people.

  • Participation

A call for the involvement of all who belong to the People of God – laity, consecrated and ordained – to engage in the exercise of deep and respectful listening to one another.

This listening creates space for us to hear the Holy Spirit together, and guides our aspirations for the Church of the Third Millennium. Participation is based on the fact that all the faithful are qualified

and are called to serve one another through the gifts they have each received from the Holy Spirit.

In a synodal Church the whole community, in the free and rich diversity of its members, is called together to pray, listen, analyse, dialogue, discern and offer advice on making pastoral decisions that correspond as closely as possible to God’s will. Genuine efforts must be made to ensure the involvement of those at the margins or who feel excluded.

  • Mission

The Church exists to evangelise. We can never be centred on ourselves. Our mission is to witness the love of God in the midst of the whole human family.

This Synodal Process has a deep missionary dimension to it. It is intended to enable the Church to better witness to the Gospel, especially with those who live on the spiritual, social, economic, political, geographical, and existential peripheries of our world.

In this way, synodality is a path by which the Church can more fruitfully fulfil her mission of evangelisation in the world, as a leaven at the service of the coming of God’s kingdom.

With only two people indicating their intention to attend the planned sessions on Monday evenings, it has been agreed to delay the Parish Synodal sessions until the General Assembly of the Synod has completed its meetings, when there are likely to be specific items for us to discern in response to the discussions taking place at the Assembly. Please continue to keep the meeting of the General Assembly in your prayers as we continue to pray the synodal prayers at daily Mass, asking for the Holy Spirit to renew the Church and the world at this important time.

The School for Synodality has recently published an online version of its work to support the development of synodality in the Church in the light of the Synod on Synodality. The School for Synodality encourages us to walk together on that journey: accompanying one another, providing refreshment or support as needed, learning the hard lessons as we go, helping one another to keep our eyes fixed on the Holy Spirit. Whether you are an individual or a whole diocese, we welcome your company on the road. More details about the School for Synodality and its programmes can be found here - https://www.schoolforsynodality.org.uk/

In preparation for the General Assembly of the Synod on Synodality, which begins in the Vatican in October 2023, the General Secretariat of the Synod has published a working document, known in Latin as an Instrumentum Laboris. The Instrumentum Laboris is a document of some sixty pages, which will be the basis for the work of the participants in the General Assembly and which incorporates the experiences of local churches in every region of the world by drawing together the work undertaken at parish, diocesan, Episcopal Conference and Continental level during the preparation process for the Synod. The Instrumentum Laboris can be read online here - https://www.cbcew.org.uk/wpcontent/uploads/sites/3/2023/06/synod-instrumentum-laboris.pdf It is composed of an explanatory text and fifteen worksheets that reveal a dynamic vision of the concept of “synodality.” Specifically, there are two main sections: Section A highlights the experience of the past two years and indicates a way forward to become an ever more Synodal Church; Section B – entitled “Communion, Mission, Participation” – focuses on the “three priority issues” at the heart of the work to be done in October 2023. These are elaborated in three main themes: growing in communion by welcoming everyone, excluding no one; recognising and valuing the contribution of every baptised person in view of mission; and identifying governance structures and dynamics through which to articulate participation and authority over time in a Missionary Synodal Church.

The Archdiocesan Synod Team has now completed a review and summary of the responses from the various parishes of the Archdiocese to the Working Document sent out from the Synod Team in Rome. The Archdiocesan Response can be read here – Diocesan Synodal Team Response to the Working Document of the Continental Stage - Cardiff In addition, Archbishop Mark, after reflecting on all of the responses from the Team, parishes and parishioners, has submitted a response of discernment on the three themes to the Bishops’ Conference. Archbishop Mark’s submission can be read here – Response to the Document of the Continental Stage from Archbishop Mark O'Toole, in Cardiff and Menevia.

What is expected of the team?

  • Diocesan Steering Group

The Diocesan Team is working with clergy, laity and groups so that as many people as possible across the Archdiocese can contribute. Consultations (meetings) are being organised in each parish. In addition, the Archdiocese will be organising smaller ‘focus’ groups so that people who have particular life experiences may be able to share from their own perspectives.

The whole process will be supported by prayer., and a spirit of cooperation and sharing.

  • Your Participation

The Synod parish consultation process respects your individuality. Some may be more comfortable in expressing themselves in a group discussion, facilitated by trained lay representatives from our parish. Four  in-person sessions are being organised in our parish; the exact dates have been confirmed and can be found within the time-line section.  We aim to finish our initial in-person consultation process in December.

You may, however, be happier to participate in a smaller, specialist group setting, a ‘one-to-one’  experience – or you may prefer the anonymity of contributing online. or with an anonymous, document submission.

A  special web form containing Survey Questions will be available via this portal to assist those who may need this option.
