Education Sunday

Education Sunday, at the start of the new academic year, offers us an opportunity to pray to Almighty God for all people involved in Catholic education, to celebrate the achievements of the past year and to ask Our Lord to bless the work of the year ahead. Bishop Marcus Stock, Chair of the Catholic Education Service, has written a letter for the occasion of Education Sunday: “As young people gather in their schools and universities, we can take these words to heart, for our Lord Jesus Christ always keeps His promise. You are gathered together in His name and He is with you as you work, learn, pray, grow and live out your mission. The great desire of Jesus is to be with us and to invite us to enter into a personal relationship with Him, a relationship of love. When a person knows they are truly loved, a new confidence abounds. St. John Bosco, the great patron Saint of young people and of education, once said: ‘Without confidence and love, there can be no true education. If you want to be loved you must love yourselves, and make your children feel that you love them.’ The mission of our Catholic schools, colleges and universities is to provide a holistic education which enables the lives of children and young people to flourish and for them to be formed into the men and women that God the Father has created them to be. May our Catholic schools, colleges and universities always be places where children and young people discover that they are known and loved by the Lord in their uniqueness. May they be able to look back and recognise that our Lord Jesus Christ was present to them throughout their education. May the gift of faith inspire them, the gift of hope encourage them, and the gift of love sustain them as they strive to live out their unique mission in the world. When young people leave our institutions, with Christ at their centre, may they do so with stronger faith and greater confidence, to share the love that they have received with others, in whatever vocation or work they undertake. We owe much gratitude to all those who, over the past 175 years, have governed, led, taught and supported the children and young people in our Catholic schools, colleges and universities, and who have created the environments and opportunities for a loving encounter with our Lord Jesus Christ. On this 175th Education Sunday, as we gather in the name of the Lord Jesus and have confidence that He is with us as He promised, let us give thanks to Almighty God for all the ways He has been present to us amidst the joys and sorrows of our life. Let us invite Him to be with us over the coming academic year.”

We gather at 8.30pm on Saturday night for the Easter Vigil at St. Teilo’s. According to a most ancient tradition, this night is "one of vigil for the Lord," and the Vigil celebrated during it. Commemorating that Holy Night when the Lord rose from the dead, is regarded as the "mother of all Masses." For on this night, the Church keeps vigil, waiting for the Resurrection of the Lord, and celebrates the Sacraments of Christian Initiation. This year we welcome three people into the Church at the Easter Vigil – Shaad, Jane and Ryan. We also celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation and First Communion for two adults, Keiron and Emanuel, who, though baptised as Catholics are now admitted to these Sacraments as they commit themselves to active engagement in the Church Please make every effort to attend the Vigil, the highpoint of the Christian Year and the central mystery of our faith.

The Chrism Mass, at which the Oils for the Church's Sacraments throughout the year are blessed, and at which the priests of the Archdiocese renew their promises, is celebrated at the Cathedral of St. David in Charles Street in Cardiff on Tuesday at 11.00am. The Chrism Mass is the central occasion of the Archdiocesan Year and is a great celebration of the life of the Archdiocese. Once people have been to the Chrism Mass, it tends to become a pivotal part of their practice of the faith. So, if you have not been before, why not go along and try it for yourself? The Chrism Mass will be the Parish Mass on Tuesday. There will be no Mass at St. Teilo’s. If you are unable to get to the Cathedral, you can access the live-stream of the Mass here: https://g0.ipcamlive.com/player/player.php?alias=5ed0e7c219233

Mass of the Lord’s Supper With the celebration of Mass on the evening of Holy Thursday, the Church begins the Easter Triduum. This Mass recalls the Last Supper at which the Lord Jesus, on the night He was betrayed, showing His love for those who were His own in the world, gave His Body and Blood under the species of bread and wine, offering them to His Father. He gave them to the Apostles so that they might partake of them. He commanded them and their successors in the priesthood to perpetuate this offering. Mass is celebrated at 7pm at St. Teilo’s. Collection at Mass The Collection for Lenten Arms will be taken during Mass on Maundy Thursday evening. The Lenten Alms this year will go towards HCPT and Aid to the Church in Need. You can donate to Lenten Alms using a debit or credit card at the electronic donor station or online here - https://donate.mydona.com/st-teilo-our-lady-of-lourdes (Donations to Lenten Alms will be available until Good Friday morning) Watching at the Altar of Repose After the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, watching at the Altar of Repose takes place until 10pm. You are welcome to come along to spend time before the Lord on this night when Jesus said to the disciples: ‘Could you not watch one hour with Me?’ So, what about you?

On this day, the Church enters into the mystery of the Passion and Death of her Lord, bringing together the Triumphal Procession of Christ as King and the proclamation of His Passion. Both aspects of the Paschal Mystery are celebrated today as we recall the Lord’s Messianic entry into Jerusalem and His Passion and Death.
