Beware if you are visiting St. Brigid’s

Webmaster • June 23, 2023

Please be warned if attending Mass, Confessions or other events at St. Brigid’s, Crystal Glen that new vehicle access rules apply if you are travelling from Fishguard Road to St. Brigid’s. Vehicle access to St Brigid’s Church, Hall and Presbytery has been restricted since Monday, June 19th. If you are going to St. Brigid’s, please make sure you enter the area via Heathwood Road and Crystal Glen, not from the opposite direction.

From Monday, June 19th, an “invisible gate” will be created across Crystal Glen by a camera located just north of St. Brigid’s on Crystal Glen. During the relevant hours, you will not be able to access St Brigid’s from the direction of Fishguard Road/Ty-Glas Avenue unless you have an access permit. The camera will capture your car’s registration number.

It will be an offence to drive through without a permit, and offenders may receive a fine of £70. This is reduced to £35 if you pay up quickly, and in the first weeks, offenders will just be given a warning rather than a fine.

After a lengthy period of negotiation between the parish and the Local Authority, the camera will function from 7.00am to 7.00pm, Monday to Saturday, so Sunday is exempt. On weekdays, arrangements are in place whereby St. Brigid’s parish can ask the council to suspend the camera, during funerals, weddings, etc.

The scheme will continue for 18 months, after which it will be reviewed to see whether it should become permanent.

Today, the Third Sunday of Advent, is also called Gaudete Sunday. This name comes from the antiphon we use at Mass today. The antiphon, in Latin “Gaudete in Domino semper: iterum dico, gaudete” or in English “Rejoice in the Lord always; again, I say, rejoice” has been used on this day since the ninth century. So today reminds us both of the joy of expectation of the coming of our Saviour at Christmas and of the traditions of our ancient faith which we continue to celebrate in our Mass today. In the spirit of the joy of expectation, the Church marks today with rose-coloured vestments and we light the rose-coloured candle in our Advent Wreath.
