On Thursday 10th May we celebrate the Solemnity of The Ascension of the Lord and a Holy Day of Obligation.
After a trial period when the Ascension, along with the Solemnity of The Epiphany of the Lord, were removed from the list of Holy Days of Obligations, the Bishops of England and Wales have received approval from the Holy See for the reinstatement of these two days of obligation. The new rules came into effect on the First Sunday of Advent 2017. This means that all Catholics in England and Wales are obliged to attend Mass on Thursday, or on the Vigil of the Solemnity on Wednesday evening.
Masses in the Parish are at 7.00pm on Wednesday 9th May at Our Lady of Lourdes (Vigil of Holy Day) and at 10.00am and 7.00pm on Thursday 10th May at St. Teilo’s.
The full list of Holy Days of Obligation are as follows:
The Epiphany of the Lord on 6th January
The Ascension of the Lord on the Thursday after the Sixth Sunday of Easter
Saints Peter and Paul on 29th June,
The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on 15th August
All Saints on 1st November.
If any of these Holy Days falls on a Saturday or Monday, the Holy Day celebration is usually transferred to the nearest Sunday.
The Solemnity of The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) remains transferred to the Sunday after Trinity Sunday in all years.
