First Sunday of Advent

Today we begin the season of Advent, the start of the new Liturgical Year. The Church not only wishes to indicate the beginning of a period but the beginning of a renewed commitment to the faith by all of us who follow Christ, the Lord. We are encouraged to use this time as a prayerful preparation for the birth of Christ in our hearts. This season is an opportunity to make Christmas 2021 a worthy celebration of the Lord’s birth, as we welcome Him anew into our hearts.

If we use it properly, this time of prayer and personal development can be so powerful, rich and intense; it endeavours to give us a renewed impetus to welcome truly the message of the One Who was incarnated for us. In fact, the entire Liturgy of the Advent season, will spur us to an awakening in our Christian life and will put us in a ‘vigilant’ disposition, to wait for Our Lord Jesus Who is coming.

This week’s newsletter is full of links that will help us celebrate Advent. Full details can be found here.

Honouring Sunday

The Bishops’ Conference has published a Statement called ‘Honouring Sunday’ which highlights the centrality of the Sunday Mass in our lives as Catholics. They say: “The central appeal of the Mass, its beauty and its transcendence, raises our minds and hearts to God in an unambiguous and compelling manner. Our Lord Jesus invites us to receive anew the gift of Sunday as the preeminent day, the day of the Resurrection, when the Church gathers to celebrate the Eucharist. Here we stand together before our heavenly Father, offering our thanksgiving and prayer, through our Saviour in the Holy Spirit. Here we receive Christ in His Word. Here we are nourished by Christ in His Precious Body and Blood. This is our primary joy, for which there is no substitute, and from which we draw our strength.”
