The Most Reverend George Stack, Archbishop of Cardiff
Following Archbishop Peter Smith’s appointment as Archbishop of Southwark in April 2010, the then Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, appointed Bishop George Stack as the seventh Archbishop of Cardiff on 19th April 2011. He was installed as Archbishop at St. David’s Metropolitan Cathedral in Cadiff on 20th June 2011.
Archbishop Stack was born 9th May 1946 in Cork, Ireland. He attended school in London and entered seminary at St. Edmund’s College, Ware in 1966. He was ordained a deacon in 1971 and then ordained a priest on 21st May 1972.
Between 1974 and 1977, Fr. Stack pursued a Bachelor of Education degree at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham. He then served in parish ministry until
1990, when he was appointed Vicar General for Clergy, a post based at Archbishop’s House in Victoria, London. He became Administrator of Westminster Cathedral in 1993 and retained this position until his Ordination as Bishop in 2001. He was made a Prelate of Honour, with the title Monsignor, to Pope John Paul II in the year 2003.
In 2001, Monsignor Stack was ordained as an Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Westminster, by Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, before being appointed as Archbishop of Cardiff in April 2011.
Following the announcement of his appointment as Archbishop of Cardiff, the then Auxiliary Bishop of Westminster said:
I am humbled and honoured at the trust Pope Benedict XVI has placed in appointing me Archbishop of Cardiff. Although I am sad to be leaving the Diocese of Westminster, in which I have served as priest for 29 years and auxiliary bishop for 10 years, I look forward to serving the people and clergy of the Church in Cardiff with love and faithfulness in the years that lie ahead. I am aware of the long and noble history of Christianity in Wales and the special gifts the Celtic people bring to the Universal Church. I hope to share in this rich tradition of faith.
